In Malawi, Africa, at a village festival, we gave prizes to the groups who had the most productive maize gardens for the year.  This one prize went to a group of HIV positive women, dispelling some wrong beliefs that HIV/AIDS patients cannot be productive or touchable! Making a difference...

One of the things I like to do is travel to third world countries and teach them stress management and coping mechanisms to deal with the trauma in their lives.  I have been to many countries that have been devastated by war, AIDS, poverty, sex trafficking and natural disasters.  I do what I can do to ease their suffering, whether it is visiting hospitals, teaching, doing ministry, counseling, learning about the country and the people, doing radio shows, visiting schools, playing with the kids, etc.  It all sounds pretty exotic in many ways, I suppose.  But, I think the thing I would like to emphasize most is that, I always come away from one of these experiences a bit changed and deeply touched by the people and their strong spirit.
Many people say to me that they would like to be involved but they think they don't have anything to offer.  Wrong.  Who was it that said, "95% of life is just showing up"?  Either Woody Allen or the Marx Brothers....whoever it was, I agree with him.  I think it makes a huge difference to just go, to just be there, to offer your support and show you care.  When people are so devastated and feel so forgotten, it is a great and powerful reminder that you are thinking of them, relating to their pain and caring.
Never think you have nothing to offer....there is always something.
